Photo 14 Jan 107 notes Alexander Calder Both his father and grandfather were well known sculptors.  As a result, Sandy,as he liked to be called, rejected art as an occupation.  Instead, he went to school to become an engineer.  After school he tried several hopeless jobs including being a lawnmower salesman.  This job ended when the mower got away from him and decimated a potential clients flower bed.  Shortly after he moved to Paris and was supported by his family on a small stipend.  This was in the 20’s and Paris was full of upcoming famous artists.  It was there that he started making his wire figures and animals.
